Trauma Informed Care
A trauma-informed approach to care acknowledges that social service providers need to have a complete picture of a person's life situation — past and present — to provide effective services with a healing orientation. Adopting trauma-informed practices can improve engagement, treatment adherence, and health outcomes. Trauma-informed care shifts the focus from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” With this simple shift in perspective, service providers can recognize a "problem" behavior as a way of coping with painful circumstances or as a stress response related to past trauma.
